Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
