UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert List with 11 Nations

Methanol caution sign

British Foreign Office has placed eleven further destinations to its official warning roster regarding the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated spirits.

The updated travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Just last month, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to a number of notable cases like the tragic loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being cautions that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can result in blindness or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol often utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.

While it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

Yet in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Official Guidance for Travelers

Government representative Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should recognize the indicators of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks overseas, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official warned.

"Should anything appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention right away."

The entire register of nations identified as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
