Trump and Japanese New Premier Exchange Praise and Commit to Strengthen ‘Extraordinary’ Bond
In the course of a recent visit to Tokyo, former American leader Donald Trump and Japan's recently elected Prime Minister Takaichi exchanged warm compliments and pledged to strengthen the already strong bilateral relations.
Key Points from the Meeting
Donald Trump commended Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and applauded her on assuming the role of Japan's inaugural woman premier. During their discussions at Tokyo's official venue, Trump voiced optimism that she would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of the country.
The prime minister, who is a close associate of former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe, applauded his efforts to resolve international conflicts and according to sources vowed to put forward Trump for the prestigious award.
Economic and Defense Deals
The two nations revealed a series of joint projects in areas such as energy, AI, and critical minerals. Japan-based companies are considering investments of up to $400bn in the US.
Furthermore, Japan had previously pledged $550bn in strategic US investments, loans, and assurances as part of an agreement to obtain relief from the former president's import duties.
These moves are seen as possibly easing any upcoming requests from Trump for Japan to increase its military spending. Takaichi addressed this by promising to accelerate proposals to raise military budget to 2% of gross domestic product.
