A familiar auction figure is a well-known participant at the yearly bidding war.

A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.

The winning offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which runs locations domestically and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," commented the business owner, a notable figure at the annual first sale.

Referred to as the King of Tuna, this businessman is noted for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder informed reporters that he was "astonished at the winning bid," noting, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This new purchase surpasses his own historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which announced the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.

The frenetic activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was quickly prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one satisfied diner.
