Alphabet to Invest $15bn to Establish AI Computing Facility in India
Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. plans to commit $15bn to build an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
This center, that is planned in the port city of the city of Visakhapatnam, will become a part of Google's international system of AI centres spread across 12 countries.
"It stands as the greatest AI facility that we are committing funds to across the globe, apart from the United States," the CEO of Google Cloud stated at an event in Delhi, the national capital on Tuesday, noting that the financial commitment will be allocated across the coming five years.
This declaration arrives during a period American President Donald Trump has been asking American companies to focus on domestic investment.
The Expanding Position of India in AI Computing
The country has risen as a key destination for AI data centers. India's low data costs and swiftly increasing digital audience have established it as a center for AI and cloud growth for tech giants.
"The facility will deliver our industry-leading technology to companies and individuals in the nation, accelerating artificial intelligence advancement and stimulating expansion nationwide," commented Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Initiative Particulars
A definitive arrangement to finalise the project is scheduled for signing this Tuesday, local government officials said.
"This represents a massive leap for our state's digital future, technological innovation, and international reputation," said the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
The venture will combine computing and artificial intelligence facilities with sustainable power solutions and an broader fiber-optic system.
Data Infrastructure Plans
The project is included in the local administration's plan to establish 6 gigawatts of computing facility capacity by 2029.
Computing facilities are tangible infrastructures that house the networking and computing devices that entities use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.
These include hosting servers, data storage systems and connectivity devices like network routers and security firewalls, along with the essential electricity and temperature control systems to function properly.
Funding Benefits
Within the state, the state authorities has been providing subsidised land and energy to entice worldwide funders.
Industry Growth
India's data centre industry has developed swiftly during the last five years, exceeding the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and almost increasing threefold its capability from 2019.
