A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's records.

Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 individuals were detained.

Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities said no less than 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Security forces said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the mission, in addition to multiple guns.
